COUNSELLING

When looking for a counsellor, it can be helpful to get clear about what is important to you. There are many approaches to counselling. They can range from being client-centred and collaborative to being more structured and directed by the counsellor. They may focus primarly on cognitive processes and behaviours, or could be emotionally or somatically focused, or a combination of any of the above! They may concentrate on addressing your present day behaviours, thoughts and emotions and/or may examine your history to identify the root causes of certain issues.

In my approach to therapy, I utilize cognitive processing, emotion-focused and somatic approaches as they are needed in a session, and depending on your preferences. In my experience, they can work well together to access and process memories and feelings, to enable positive therapeutic change. I also often inquire about the past while also working with how an issue is showing up in the present. I may also offer to explore a spiritual or existential perspective if that may be of interest.

In working with me, I can offer you a safe space to feel your emotions, understand yourself better and work through patterns that limit your potential. You may be experiencing loss or are going through a life transition. You may struggle with your self-esteem, body image or gender identity, or with recognizing your needs and boundaries. You might be queer and are looking for an affirming and inclusive therapist who can help with issues related to your identity and sexuality. Perhaps you have relationship challenges such as issues with attachment, codependency and communication. Or, you may have a hard time with your emotions, and may have trauma.

I understand the pain and paralysis that can come from perfectionism, self-criticism and shame. I also understand how hard it can be to feel safe at times, be it in your own body, in connection with others, or otherwise. I know first-hand what it means to change the relationship within in order to live a more fulfilling life, and can help you to do so too.

I have been on a therapeutic path for over 25 years, first for myself, and now to help others. My approach is informed by an MA in Counselling Psychology, and training in Somatic Experiencing, somatic psychotherapy, and Internal Family Systems. I am a warm, kind and compassionate therapist who works from a person-centred, culturally inclusive, gender-affirming and feminist perspective. In addition, I have years of personal practice with mindfulness, yoga, breathwork, and earth-based spirituality.
